this topic is a very popular subject of discussion on businessweek…and i think some blogs have discussed him as well….and yes, Damn the lucky guy 😉
I wouldn’t be saying this guy is “lucky” just yet.
He dropped out of college after his first year and has had what amounts to non-quantitative employment for the past few years.
Some things to consider:
1) HBS Class of 2008 will have grade disclosure
2) He will be in a room full of people who do not like him from the “get go” because he 1) was accepted into HBS solely because he works for the President and 2) he has no undergraduate education.
3) How well do you think he is going to do as compared to his classmates who all have at least some quantitative work experience or knowledge.
John, great comments in your post. I’ll respond to each of them:
1. I still can’t believe that HBS is going to grade disclosure. I don’t know anything about the guy’s quant skills, but he might have to work hard to get into some good study groups
2. Man, that’s going to be a tough thing for him to face, but something tells me that it won’t be a problem for him for too long. HBS is set up in sections and, from what i hear, those sections turn into supportive communities pretty quickly.
3. Whew, this is the tough question. as I said above, I don’t know much about his background, but, if what you say is right, he may have a heck of a time getting the swing of things without that quantitative background or work experience. My quant knowledge was pretty weak when i started at Stanford and it was a BEAST getting through the quant classes in the Core. As I said above, i hope he can get into some strong study groups early on for his own sake.
FG, I figured that he’d be a big topic of discussion on BusinessWeek. If that forum is the same as it was when i was there, I bet they’re tearing the kid apart and it probably isn’t even be deserved. It’d be a shame if he’s a nice guy and people dump on him automatically for this.
