Recently, I was approached by the team at Campus Splash and asked to write an article targeted at college students to offer some tips on how they could prepare to create a great MBA application. As all of you know, this is a topic that I’m pretty passionate about, so I jumped at the opportunity. In particular, I’m a strong believer that one’s college years are the perfect time to do this prep, so I consider Campus Splash’s audience to be at the sweet spot for this sort of thing.

So, you want to get into business school, huh? And, am I right in assuming that you’ll want to go to a really good program too? If your answer is “yes” for both questions, let’s start by acknowledging that getting into a top business school is far from easy.

Compiling a strong MBA application package, which consists of essays, GPA, GMAT score, activities, and recommendations, can seem like a tremendously daunting task in the beginning. Also, if you’re aiming for a top MBA program, the competition is fierce, especially given the tough economic environment of the past few years, which has left many young professionals unexpectedly unemployed. And, in many cases, two of the most important components of one’s applicant profile (namely undergrad GPA and work experience) were set long before the person realized that he or she wanted an MBA. That said, while it isn’t easy to get into a top school, it certainly isn’t an impossible feat if you are well prepared for the application process.

Over the years, I have advised many people while they were applying to business school and one key success factor is preparing for the process as early as possible. Making this move can be very difficult for people who choose to pursue an MBA a few years into their careers or decide to apply at the last minute. But, for those who target the MBA early on (even as early as during college), it can be a much easier road. The old adage “Proper preparation prevents poor performance” is especially true when it comes to the MBA application game.

If you are college student who hopes to earn an MBA from a top school one day, the following list contains a few items that might help you position yourself well for B-school applications between now and when you graduate:
