A major component of this site is a weblog that has had several lives, from its start as a featured MBA applicant/student blog on a separate site to its own presence on the Blogger system and now to its own domain as my personal website.
As you read through the entries, you'll see me go through three distinct phases in my life:
- Pre-MBA experience: Experiences that one typically goes through before matriculating at business school
- Life as an MBA student: Highs and lows of my time as a student at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in much more detail than most would expect to see
- Post-MBA life...and serving as a career/education/life coach to the masses: Responses to questions emailed to me by readers, where I use what I have learned through my own missteps and experiences to help others achieve their goals and avoid making the same misstepsÂ
For those of you who’d like to become mentors…
What's good, peoples. I've gotten a few really cool emails and comments since posting my entry about poverty a few days ago and thought the comment below should be shared. If anyone out there is looking to become a mentor to a student, check out the blog below. I...
Blog Action Day 2008: How MBAs can help fight poverty in the U.S.
What's going on, everyone. I'm not sure if anyone noticed the "Blog Action Day" banner I added to this site last month, but it's an initiative driven by bloggers across the Web to get the word out about a particular issue. On one day per year, bloggers are supposed to...
Responding to a follow-up email from a previous reader
Hey there, everyone. I hope you're all doing well. The email below is a follow-up from a reader who sent me a query over the summer. I actually wrote my response below to him about a month ago, but, somehow, the email got lost in one of my folder, so I'm just now...
A sad day for the Stanford GSB community…
I received the following article from one of my GSB'07 friends this morning and my mind hasn't been right ever since. I didn't know any of these kids, but I feel so sad for their families, loved ones, and classmates. The GSB community is like a family, so we really...
Question from an applicant with pre-MBA consulting and PE experience
What's good, peoples. I hope you're all having a nice weekend. The email below is from a reader with pre-MBA experience in consulting and private equity who wonders how well Stanford would set him up to return to PE. I'm far from an expert at the topic, but I did my...
Question from a recent MSc grad targeting B-school
What's going on, everyone. This is going to be a relatively short entry because the email I'm responding to is asking for the world but isn't giving me much to work from. So, I couldn't really give the guy much in terms of a response. I'm not saying that anyone who...
Follow-up to yesterday’s blog entry
The email below is a response from the reader whose message was posted yesterday. I love getting a quick response to an email that I've put a lot of time into, but it's even better when the person truly "gets it". I'm posting this response because SZ's perspective...
Question from an undergrad about choosing a management consulting specialty
Wow, y'all know I really like getting emails from undergrad kids who are being thoughtful about their road to an MBA while in college. I wish I'd had such forethought back in the day, so I always get an extra kick out of responding to their emails. The reader below...
Question from a young professional whose career is in a rut
What's good, fam. I hope you're all doing well as you're reading this entry. As I write this entry, I'm thankful to have this blog to distract me from the ups and downs of this thing called life. Sometimes, I wish I had a "Marquis" that I could email for guidance when...
A video that I just HAD to pass along…
As many of you in the U.S. know, the upcoming presidential race has become very heated over the past month or so. Well, I saw this YouTube clip today and it was so shocking that I HAD to post the link to it. You don't have to watch it if you don't want to, but it is...
