The past few days have been crazy with meetings, classes, and assignments, so I haven’t been able to write an entry to recap what was a pretty busy weekend here at the GSB. Here goes the update…
Every year during either the first or second week of March, the BBSA holds its annual Liquidity Preference Function (LPF…basically it’s a weekly happy hour at the GSB that some club sponsors) on friday afternoon followed by the BBSA conference on Saturday. This year,I, along with my BBSA Comunity and Social co-Chair KW (who did the planning), were responsible for putting on the LPF. It was a pretty big undertaking with us having to get food, wine, kegs, and non-alcoholic beverages for about 400 people. Usually LPFs draw about 200 or so people, but, because the BBSA one always coincides with Admit Weekend, there are always extra people that come through. Everything went off without a hitch, but it was unseasonably cold, so we were all posted up outside the library for about 3 hours between setting up for the event and cleaning up afterward in lower-40-something degree weather. Word to the wise…if you’re going to be in the cold for that long, make sure you wear a coat and gloves because I was basically frozen while I was out there and I’m still feeling the effects of it now.
On Saturday, we had the 23rd annual BBSA conference, which turned out to be a great event. It was planned by a team of BBSA members, led by my classmates EE and GW, and everything went perfectly. The theme of the conference was “Empowering Communities Through Leadership” and the planning team put together three really good panels on entrepreneurship, media & entertainment, and economic development. The highlights of the conference were the double-headers of keynote speakers with Carla Harris, a Managing Director and Head of Equity Private Placements from Morgan Stanley, and Candace Matthews, President of the SoftSheen-Carson division of L’Oreal USA. Both of these women came from humble beginnings and were able to find acadmic and professional success through the power of hard work and perseverence. Their messages were fantastic and I plan to use them as motivation as I figure out my own path to success.
This weekend was also the first-round Admit Weekend and there was a lot of energy around campus. Unfortunately, I was swamped with a ton of work and couldn’t participate in too many of the activities, but I still met a few of the admits and their energy had me hyped up on their behalf. I didn’t want to go through the Admit Weekend without doing anything, so I volunteered to help the admits with their study group preparation for their in-class immersion experience, but, to my surprise, they didn’t need my help at all…those kids jumped into it and were killin’ those cases. As I watched them, I got really nostalgic and thought back to my own Admit Weekend. It seems like it was so long ago, but it was really only a couple of years. Time flies when you’re having fun…
As I mentioned in one of last week’s entries, I’m closing out the Winter quarter this week and the end couldn’t have come soon enough. I’m pretty much beat right about now and the start of Spring Break is feeling like a national holiday for me. I had a bunch of group and individual assignments due between Monday and today, but, fortunately, I stayed in during all of the activities and partying this weekend and got on the grind, so I’ve been able to take it easy. I wish I had known that I could be chillin’ like this this late in the quarter before now because I was damn near killing myself for the previous four quarters procrastiating and cramming all of my work into the last few days. I’m going to have to be smarter with my work next quarter so I can have a relaxing end to my time at the GSB.
